Have you ever wondered what the plants you see on your outdoor adventures are named or if they will grow in your garden? It is a pleasure to share with you seventeen years of experience studying native herbaceous, shrub and tree species of our region, the uses and the identifying characteristics. Lisa Machina is a local botanist who has studied native plants at NAU in the School of Forestry, Botany Deptartment and the Ecological Restoration Institute. She has led plant walks for NAU, the Arboretum at Flagstaff, the Arizona Native Plant Society, and the Arizona Ethnobotanical Research Association. She is an experienced native plant landscaper and does native plant landscape design.

For the month of May we will be going to the Overlook off 89A south of Flagstaff overlooking Oak Creek Canyon. This spot is special because lots of wonderful native plants are blooming earlier in spring than in other areas. We will see native plants, shrubs and trees in bud, bloom or seed. We will learn identifying characteristics, ecological importance, and medicinal and functional uses of plants.

Each participant will recieve a comprehensive plant list to take notes on and bring on future excursions to help you know your natives.

The walk will be about 2 hours long, 3 hours long including travel to and from our destination. Please bring your sunhat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. The hike will be easy.
